Our Story - Connecting with My Roots

In 2022, I embarked on a journey to Africa, visiting Guinea, my father’s homeland. During my visit, I observed a surprising reliance on imported rice from India and other Asian countries, despite rice being the main staple food. This sparked my curiosity and concern about local agricultural practices.

In 2023, I traveled to Liberia, my mother’s homeland, to reconnect with my roots and understand the land that shaped my family. The trip was eye-opening. I witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by many Liberians, especially the dire need for affordable rice and job opportunities. The country, rich in natural resources, paradoxically relies heavily on rice imports, with over 60% of its rice consumed being imported. This dependence has left many unable to afford this essential food item, exacerbating food insecurity and poverty.

As I traveled through Liberia, I saw families spending a significant portion of their income on rice, leaving little for other essentials. The average price of a 25kg bag of imported rice is $17.50, while the average monthly income in rural areas is less than $100. This creates a dire situation where families struggle to feed themselves and take care of their basic needs. Inspired by the resilience and spirit of the people, I felt a profound urgency to take action.

Moved by the experiences and the glaring need for local rice production, I envisioned a project that would address the rice shortage and create jobs, stimulating economic growth. Liberia's climate and environment are perfect for rice production, making it an ideal location for sustainable agriculture. Thus, Turay Agri Ventures was born, with a mission to revolutionize rice production in Liberia. However, rice is just the beginning. Our ultimate goal is to develop agriculture across Liberia, enabling the country to produce the majority of its needs and reduce reliance on imports.

At Turay Agri Ventures, we envision a future where Africa produces the majority of its agricultural needs, reducing dependency on imports and ensuring food security for all. By expanding our sustainable farming practices across the continent, we aim to empower local farmers, boost economies, and create a self-sufficient Africa. Our efforts will focus on innovative agricultural techniques, community engagement, and environmental stewardship, creating a model of agricultural excellence that can be replicated throughout Africa.

While rice production is our starting point, our broader vision includes diversification into other crops and agricultural products. This expansion will involve introducing high-yield, sustainable farming methods for crops such as maize, cassava, and vegetables. By developing a variety of agricultural products, we aim to further reduce Africa’s reliance on imports, increase food security, and support local economies. This diversification will also help us mitigate risks and ensure year-round productivity and profitability.
